Buying a car is considered a rite of passage for American drivers. The freedom to travel when and where you want, without having to hail a ride or wait for public transport, is a big advantage of owning a vehicle. One important aspect of researching the ideal vehicle is to consider the total cost of ownership, including insurance.
“There are a number of reasons why a vehicle might cost less to insure, such as they cost less to repair them,” said Chong Gao, director of product management R&D for Mercury Insurance. “Mercury put together this list to help savvy vehicle shoppers know where savings can be found.”
Purchasing a car — a coupe, sedan or convertible — rather than an SUV or truck can come with a few benefits. Cars like sedans continue to be more fuel efficient than SUVs, and are considered easier to drive since they aren’t as top-heavy as an SUV. Maneuvering around sharp street corners, cars tend to stick to the ground better, and it’s much easier to find and fit in a parking spot. Cars also feature closed trunks — storing your valuables there rather than out in the open like the back of an SUV’s cargo space offers more safety in terms of both visibility and security.
Additionally, cars often start at a lower price than SUVs or trucks, leaving you with more wiggle room in your budget if you want a higher trim level or extra features.
