Home Eligibility & Safety Standards

Find out if you could be eligible for a Mercury policy with our minimum fire-safety criteria.

Class A Roof

Your roof must be a Class A fire-rated roof. Mercury’s Class A roof options include:

  • Metal
  • Clay tile
  • Concrete tile
  • Slate
  • Class A asphalt shingles

Noncombustible Siding

Ensure 6-inch vertical noncombustible clearance at the base of exterior walls.

Ember-Resistant Vents

Vents should be equipped with noncombustible metal mesh screening with openings no larger than 1/8 inch.

Outdoor Decks

If there’s an outdoor deck, the base needs to be enclosed and protected, and the deck material itself should ideally be noncombustible. That said, the latter requirement can be flexed if all others are met.

Zone Zero

Our 5-foot zone requirements are more flexible than IBHS standards:

  • Noncombustible fencing
  • Grass and ground covers are fine
  • Smaller, high-moisture or less intensely burning plants are fine within 5 feet if:
    1. The siding is entirely noncombustible rather than just the first 6 inches off the ground.
    2. The plants are not near or under vulnerable structural features such as first-story glass (windows or french doors) or vents, unless the vents are also flame resistant.
  • Mature trees, even within 5 feet, are generally okay if they are tall enough that the branches are above the roof.
