Doorbell security cameras. Robotic vacuums. Voice-activated assistants. Automated climate control. Smart home technology is becoming more accessible in the 21st century, enhancing the levels of connectivity, convenience and security we’re able to experience from the comfort of the couch and even when we’re away. But is this technology right for you?
Whether you love it or hate it, here’s what Mercury discovered in its recent consumer survey about smart home technology adoption and usage, as well as the benefits of smart home technology demonstrated from consumer use.
Safety comes first
More than half of survey respondents (53%) believe smart home technology makes their home safer, listing the ability to monitor security and peace of mind as its most beneficial aspects.
“Connected devices have given homeowners an effortless way to keep an eye on their homes from anywhere and at any time, which can help thwart potential break-ins and even mitigate property loss if something like a fire were to break out when you weren’t at home,” said Bonnie Lee, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. “Of course, you should take the proper steps to protect your home – like locking doors and windows, for instance – before you leave, but smart home devices can add an extra level of security.”
However, being alerted when someone enters your property, unexpected movement is detected or a smoke alarm is triggered isn’t for everyone – 6% of respondents prefer not to receive security alerts while away from home.
Convenience equals more you time
Convenience is one of the biggest appeals of smart home devices – of the consumers surveyed, it’s the second aspect they feel is the most beneficial for their everyday lifestyle. In-app control of your lighting, cooling and heating, and security systems make it easier to keep your home adjusted to your preferences while you’re out for the day. Have a busy schedule and can’t make it to the grocery store? Smart fridges track what’s inside, allowing you to create a shopping list with the installed virtual assistant and order your groceries online for delivery.
Smart home devices exist to simplify your life so you can get back to doing the things you enjoy. In fact, 63% of the survey respondents mentioned they would indulge in personal hobbies or outings with friends and family with their new-found free time.
Energy efficiency helps save money
The best way to cut costs on energy consumption is to simply use less energy. According to the 2018 U.S. Energy Information Administration Average Monthly Residential Bill Census, the average American household spent $117.65 per month on electricity. The EPA’s Energy Star program and its partners helped Americans avoid $30 billion in energy costs, in addition to reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions.
There are several smart home devices on the market that can help you conserve energy and save on your electricity bill, including thermostats, light bulbs and plugs. If you enjoy a cozy home in the winter, a programmable thermostat can engage your heating system at the times you’ll be home and shut it down when you head to work or leave town for a trip. Energy efficient lightbulbs can be programmed in a similar way, alleviating the need for your physical presence to set the ambiance of your home. Of the Mercury survey respondents, 27% have already incorporated these energy-efficient smart devices into their homes.
Smart home devices are here to stay, and they are here to work harmoniously with your life, not disrupt it. From intuitive thermostats to voice-activated security systems, these smart home devices enable you to lead a more convenient, environmentally-efficient and safer lifestyle.
