Mercury Assists Texans and Oklahomans Impacted by Extreme Cold

Winter’s icy grip continues to make life difficult for Texas and Oklahoma residents. The unprecedented freeze has left hundreds of thousands of residents without electricity and water, and millions of others are dealing with freezing temperatures, icy roads, and frozen pipes.

The Mercury Insurance claims team stands ready to assist customers who have been impacted by the extreme cold. Customers can report claims 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling our claims hotline at (800) 503-3724.

“Losing your power and access to water during a weather event like this can be devastating, to you and to your home,” said Christopher O’Rourke, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. “We want to assure all of our customers that we’re here to help. While we highly recommend finding a safe and warm place to wait out the outages, we understand that so many can’t. We offer these tips to help protect both you and your home.”

“Mercury also recommends that policyholders report losses as soon as possible, so we can begin to assist with the rebuilding process. We are working diligently to respond to all claims, in spite of the weather-related challenges.”

If a claim needs to be filed, O’Rourke advises policyholders follow a few simple procedures to help speed up the process.

When filing a claim:

  • Contact Mercury immediately to report your loss.
  • Be prepared to provide your policy number.
  • Do not remove debris or damaged property that may be related to your claim.

Steps after filing a claim:

  • Prepare a detailed inventory of destroyed or damaged property.
  • Offer photos or video of your home and possessions to your adjuster, if these are available.
  • Keep records and receipts for additional living expenses that were incurred if you were forced to leave your home and provide copies to your adjuster.

O’Rourke also recommends Texans and Oklahomans listen to local emergency personnel, evacuate if possible and, if not, use the following guidelines to help protect themselves from the elements:

  • Protect Your Pipes: If you have water pressure, you can avoid frozen pipes by opening a faucet to let water trickle out;
  • Stay Safe and Warm: Maintain heat to the extent you are able;
  • Use Your Generator Safely: If you have a generator, use it safely by keeping it outdoors in a dry location. Plug your appliance(s) directly into the generator or use a heavy duty outdoor rated extension cord in good condition;
  • Portable Cell Phone Battery Chargers: You can also use your generator to make sure you keep your portable cell phone battery packs fully charged allowing you to recharge cell phones and other USB-enabled devices during the power loss;
  • Heat Your Home Wisely: Do not use grills, camp stoves, gasoline, propane, or other combustion type devices for heating your home’s interior;
  • Pools and Sprinklers: If you own a pool, make sure you put your cover on both the pool and the pump to protect them from the elements. Additionally, make sure all water is off to your sprinklers and irrigation systems;
  • Be Candle-wise: Limit the use of candles, but if you do use them make sure candles are set on secure surfaces and away from children, pets and combustible materials; and
  • Claims: Report potential claims as soon as possible.
