Did you know . . .
The region known as Oklahoma first opened for homesteading on April 22, 1889. During the historic land rush, 50,000 settlers stormed the area on horse-back and in covered wagons. Those who tried to beat the noon starting gun were called "Sooners," which later became the nickname for this state. Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as the 46th state in 1907.
Oil was first discovered in Oklahoma in the late 1890s. During the first 30 years of the 20th century, Oklahoma grew rich on oil. Today, the state's production of natural-gas has surpassed the wealth generated by its petroleum-rich fields. However, oil refining remains an important industry, as does machinery manufacturing (for construction and oil equipment), meat packing and food processing.
Oklahoma driving — what you need to know.
All 50 states have some version of Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL). GDL is a program that gradually phases in driving privileges for new teen drivers, as they gain experience behind the wheel. Teenage drivers in Oklahoma—and most other states—have more crashes than any other age group. For this reason, insurance premiums for teen drivers are high for teens in this state. During their first year of driving, 25% of 16 year olds either receive a ticket or are involved in a crash. Mercury offers some of the most competitive rates available for teen drivers, however, so talk to a Mercury agent today to see how much you can save. You'll be glad you did!
